This feature entitled “Warrior” is a successful 2D & 3D collaboration of separate animation studios, with Shanghai Cartoon (doing the 3D portion) and Shanghai Animation (doing the 2D portion). Shanghai Animation is the oldest traditional 2D studio in China, dating back to the 1940’s.  It was decided there were several elements in this 2D feature that needed a 3D ‘toon-shaded’ treatment, such as: the horses were all done with 3D animation, multiple effects such as water were done in 3D, and some sets were done in 3D. This litmus test of Shanghai Cartoon working with a 2D traditional studio on a ‘mix’ medium feature film, helped accelerate our toon-shading R & D to the next level.
